New Marathon Runner Inspires Others
01:10 PM PDT on Wednesday, March 19, 2008
Here's an inspirational story about making a difference. We profiled a man who may have you re-thinking what you can achieve at any age... or under any circumstance.
A quick stretch and he's off. This easy jaunt around Keizer's McNary high school track is no problem for 47 year old Greg Johnson.

It wasn't always like that, said Greg, "When I started, I couldn't run a mile without stopping three or 4 times."
Greg is talking about his life just three short years ago. 50 pounds heavier, he led a lifestyle lacking in both exercise and healthy foods when doctors diagnosed his dad with heart disease.
That's when the running started. And then a heart attack killed his close friend Catarino without warning and Greg just knew he had to do more.
"I was running one day and it just came to me it'd be great to do a marathon in memory of Cat and in honor of my dad," said Greg.
So, late last year, at 46 years old, this man who had never run in his youth nailed the Portland marathon!
And then one in Virginia.
And then one in Texas.
"I did three marathons in 9 weeks," said Greg.
His wife Becky chimed in, "I thought he was crazy. One a month was quite a bit. But he was determined to do it and I've been married to him for 26 years and I knew once he said he'd do it that's exactly what he would do."
Utah is next... all with the goal of raising 10 thousand dollars for the American Heart Association by the end of April. Sadly, tendonitis that leveled him a few months ago will likely keep him from that monetary goal. But that's okay, he says.
Life isn't about reaching every goal. It's about setting them in the first place.
"If I can change my lifestyle at my age into a healthy lifestyle then anyone can do it," said Greg.
When he's not running, Greg is the pastor of Loving God Fellowship in Salem.
Stephanie linked to his website where he talks about his fundraising efforts on her Health Blog.
