Three Portland families finish Drive Less, Save More contest

Three local families accustomed to driving a lot went "green" for a week as they tried to out-save each other in the Drive Less, Save More Contest.
Last year's winning family trimmed 500 miles from their driving budget in one week.
This year, three families again implemented lifestyle changes.
Metro, Tri-Met, Zipcar, Intel and other sponsors gave each family the tools to reduce their driving for one week.
Before this year's contest started, the Edwards-Schofield family logged a thousand miles a month in their cars. Even with a hybrid, that cost them about $200-bucks each month.
During the contest, husband Dave commuted by bike and MAX train from northeast Portland to Intel in Hillsboro. Wife Emily used mass transit.
The Edwards-Schofield family won this year's competition.

The Pfeifter family in Vancouver, Wash. was also used to putting on the miles. Husband Tom commuted partially by bike and both parents relied on carpooling.

The Coomes family in Beaverton is always on the go, and during the contest, the family relied on MAX a lot. The Coomes children walked to and from school.
