OHSU goes paperless
06:16 PM PDT on Tuesday, April 8, 2008
OHSU is going paperless. The hospital says the move will not only save money and trees but it will also save lives.
On Tuesday workers loaded up thousands of blank patient forms to be recycled.
The documents are now computerized.
That means all medical personnel who have contact with a patient now have access to that person’s medical history and up to the minute medical care.
As far as security, OHSU says each computer has a secure password to protect patient’s privacy.
"What we fail to understand in the paper world, there's no way to track who looked at your record. In the electronic world every time a new provider accesses the record they have to document why they're doing that," said OHSU Chief Operating Officer Cindy Grueber.
The hospital launches the paperless in-patient forms on Sunday. It says it will save hundreds of thousands of dollars in paper.
