Hillsboro creates solar project to cut energy costs

03:03 PM PST on Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Associated Press

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) -- Hillsboro plans to install solar panels at a reservoir to cut energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The contractor for the job, Honeywell, announced the plans Wednesday. The company will install ground-mounted solar panels next to the Hillsboro Evergreen Reservoir water storage facility and sell the electricity produced by the panels to the city for use at the reservoir.

The panels are expected to generate more than 104,000 kilowatt-hours annually, almost 20 percent of the power needed for the reservoir.

Honeywell expects to begin providing electricity for the Evergreen Reservoir by July.
