SEATTLE -- The Seahawks -- and every other NFL team -- boasts they have the best fans in the league. But Forbes broke it down with measurable statistics and determined Seattle has the 5th best fans -- which is an improvement over its ranking from last year.
Forbes looked at television and radio ratings, stadium attendance, merchandise sales, social media reach, and visits to team websites.
But what about the potential bandwagon fan effect?
"... we used three years of TV, stadium attendance, and merchandise sales, and considered both the numbers and the trends," writes Forbes.
The Seahawks moved from No. 9 in 2015 to No. 5 this year.
The team was given a Hometown Crowd Score of 4 (out of 32 teams), which is based on the percentage of people in the greater Seattle area that watched, attended, or listened to a game in the past year.
The Seahawks also ranked 9th in TV audience; tied for first in filling CenturyLink Field on game days; 9th in social media reach; 6th in website visits; and 3rd in merchandise sales.
Green Bay Packers fans ranked No. 1 for the second straight year followed by the Dallas Cowboys, the Denver Broncos (who actually fell from No. 2 despite winning the Super Bowl) and the New England Patriots.
Seattle's division rival, the San Francisco 49ers, finished 10th this year after failing to make the top 10 in 2015. Their new stadium, which opened in 2014, may have something to do with that -- even though there have been plenty of signs of empty seats at games last year and in Monday's season opener.
