Prescribed burn planned at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge
08:56 AM PDT on Thursday, August 28, 2008
PORTLAND -- A controlled burn was scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Southeast Portland and area residents were encouraged to spread the word so no one thinks it's a wildfire.
The Portland Fire Bureau planned the prescribed burn for 1 p.m. at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. It will start on the north end of the refuge.
The goal will be to bring back natural habitat and get rid of hazardous fuel, specifically non-native weeds.
During the burn, public access will be limited. The parking lot off Milwaukie Avenue was closed so fire crews could use it as a staging area. Neighborhoods affected by the smoke will include the Brooklyn and Sellwood-Moreland neighborhoods.
This prescribed burn was funded by a FEMA grant.
