PORTLAND, Ore. -- It's time to check the gypsy moth traps.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture is checking the 18,000 traps that were placed statewide earlier this year to detect the hungry insect pest that can damage or even kill trees.

So far, a total of seven gypsy moths have been trapped. Six were found in a residential area of southeast Eugene where two gypsy moths were detected last year.

One more moth was trapped in a residential area of northeast Portland.

In Southern Oregon, no moths have been found in traps in Jackson County.

A total of 12 gypsy moths were trapped statewide last year.
