FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Crews fought one of the first wildfires of the season near Forest Grove Wednesday.

The 2500 Road Rekindle fire was reported around 8:30 a.m. near Stimson Mainline Road and was burning on about 10 acres.

Crews said there were several spot fires being whipped up by winds. Oregon Forestry spokesman Rod Nichols said a column of smoke could be seen in the area.

In Gresham, fire crews declared July 1 the official start of fire season.

No backyard, agricultural or open burning is allowed. Gresham officials said the closure will be in the fall, when there is enough rain to safely allow this type of burning.

Spring rains reduced the fire danger in much of the West this year, officials said. But one of the hot spots is north-central Washington.

The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, says the wildfire danger in north-central Washington is above-average.
