Temperatures put fire crews in Ore. on high alert
07:03 PM PDT on Saturday, June 28, 2008
BEND, Ore. -- Central Oregon firefighters are on high alert this weekend, bracing for near-record temperatures and possible dry lightning.
On Sunday, forecasters are predicting that lightning strikes could be scattered across the region, from The Dalles to Crescent, and from the south fork of the John Day River to the Cascades.
Thirty fire engines from the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management are ready to respond, plus another eight from the Oregon Department of Forestry.
Still, some of the contract crews are fighting fires in California, said Virginia Gibbons, the fire information specialist with the U.S. Forest Service in Central Oregon, so if a big fire does start to blaze, it could be hard to pull in additional resources.
