Bottle Bill extended to plastic bottles
07:03 PM PDT on Thursday, June 14, 2007
SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon's pioneering bottle bill got is first major change since it was introduced 36 years ago when governor Kulongoski signed a bill to extend it to plastic water bottles.
Salem Republican Vicki Berger, whose father inspired and lobbied for the first-of-its-kind bill in 1971, says it still works but the industry has changed and that the bill needs to reflect today's buying habits.
Other states have deposits for recycling drink containers but only Maine and Hawaii require a nickel deposit on water bottles.
Kulongoski also signed one of the nation's few electronic waste recycling measures. It will allow Oregonians to recycle their obsolete electronics for free by requiring manufacturers to pay for take-back centers across the state.
