Group names Oregon's Rogue River to threatened rivers list
08:20 AM PDT on Friday, April 18, 2008
GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- American Rivers has listed the Rogue River second on its annual list of most threatened rivers.
The Rogue is the most popular wilderness whitewater run in Oregon and one of the first to be protected by federal legislation.
American Rivers said Thursday that logging and road-building planned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management will harm the river's water quality and salmon habitat.
BLM spokesman Jim Whittington says the listing is unwarranted. He says the nearest timber sale is more than a mile from the protected section of the Rogue.
And, he says, the sale might not go through, depending on how protections for the northern spotted owl work out.
Advocacy group's most-endangered US rivers
1. Catawba-Wateree River (N.C., S.C.)
2. Rogue River (Ore.)
3. Cache la Poudre River (Colo.)
4. St. Lawrence River (N.Y., Canada)
5. Minnesota River (S.D., Minn.)
6. St. John River (Fla.)
7. Gila River (N.M., Ariz.)
8. Allagash Wilderness Waterway (Maine)
9. Pearl River (Miss., La.)
10. Niobrara River (Wyo, Neb.)
