Experts analyze whether we'll get a warm summer -- or not
12:54 PM PDT on Monday, April 14, 2008
After a much-enjoyed sunny weekend, temperatures plummeted on Monday, dropping by nearly 30 degrees in just two day’s time.
Andy Bryant, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service, said the dramatic change can be blamed on the return of northwesterly winds.
“The jetstream has continued to bring cool air from the Gulf of Alaska and the North Pacific into our area, and we just haven’t broken out of that pattern much at all,” said Bryant.
He described this past weekend's warm temperatures as an exception.
"We did have the brief high pressure and the thermal trough that brought some warm weather to the region over the weekend,” he explained
And it looks like that warmth may not return – at least not yet.

More chilly northwesterly winds were expected for the rest of April. So, outlooks show cooler than average weather persisting.
Indications are that May and June could go either way – so it may continue to be unseasonably cool, or it could start warming up. What’s more clear is the outlook for this summer.
The Climate Prediction Center’s outlook for July, August, and September shows a strong possibility of above average warmth along with below average rainfall. If that outlook ends up being right, the upcoming summer could be a real treat.
