Oregon representatives announce wilderness plan
07:11 AM PDT on Wednesday, April 2, 2008
WASHINGTON -- Representatives Peter DeFazio and Earl Blumenauer want Congress to increase wilderness protection in Oregon.
Their "Oregon Treasures" bill would add about 132,000 acres of wilderness and 34,550 acres of recreation area to the Mount Hood National Forest. It was proposed Tuesday.
The bill also calls for nearly 80 new miles of wild and scenic rivers in the forest, as well as 142 miles of new wild and scenic river designations for Rogue River tributaries and additional protection for the Oregon Caves National Monument.
The House bill includes about 6,500 acres left out of a similar bill in the Senate. A committee has sent that bill to the full Senate.
