Winter tough on Eastern Oregon deer
04:45 PM PDT on Saturday, March 29, 2008
BAKER CITY, Ore. -- The long, and lingering, winter has been tough on the deer of Eastern Oregon.

State wildlife biologist Nick Myatt says a recent count in Baker County showed 29 deer fawns for every 100 does, a low survival rate.
But the winter hasn't been so harsh as those of the 1980s or early 1990s.
After the winter of 1992-93, he says, the ratio was just 13 fawns per 100 does.
Myatt says winter weather didn't start early, and there were no prolonged periods of subzero temperatures.
He says the state may sell fewer tags for bucks for the fall hunt.
But, Myatt says, elk seemed to do well.
