Hood River theater teacher wins Tony award

NEW YORK CITY -- Hood River Valley High theater Rachel Harry was honored by the Tony Awards Sunday with the Excellence in Theatre Education Award 2017.

She picked up the award during the live ceremony at Radio City Music Hall. In addition to the free trip, she was given a $10,000 prize.

Harry has been a theater teacher at the school for three decades.

According to the awards website, the winner is a theater instructor "who has demonstrated monumental impact on the lives of students and who embodies the highest standards of the profession. A panel of judges comprised of the American Theatre Wing, The Broadway League, Carnegie Mellon University and other leaders from the theatre industry selected Harry from finalists across the nation."
