BARACK OBAMA: WELCOMES CARDINALS TO WHITE HOUSE

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama calls the St. Louis Cardinals the "greatest comeback team in the history of baseball." The president welcomed the team to the East Room of the White House yesterday to celebrate their World Series victory over the Texas Rangers. He called the Game Six win which brought the Cards back from the brink of elimination "one of the best baseball games of all time." Also at the event was first lady Michelle Obama, who was celebrating her 48th birthday. Both were given team jerseys and souvenir bats. The president joked that he was "a little bit worried" about his wife getting a bat, should he -- as he put it -- "mess up." Mrs. Obama said with a deadpan expression: "I'll take my bat" -- then lifted it and looked like she was about to take it upside her husband's head. The audience laughed.
