NEW YORK (AP) — "American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez says despite this season's focus on the emotional backstories of contestants, the competition is still all about the singing.
Lopez predicted Wednesday this will be the show's standout season for talent. Although she said she's had to fight back tears when meeting contestants like Chris Medina, whose fiancee suffered brain injury in a car accident, she insists the singing is still the focus.
As always, the fans will be the final judge. After the season premiere, ratings for the Fox singing competition were down 13 percent from last year's debut.
