PITTSBURGH -- An artist has raised enough crowd-sourced funds to design a doll with normal body proportions in response to Barbie's unrealistic body.

In less than a day, Nickolay Lamm of Pittsburgh has exceeded his $95,000 goal to produce a first run of the Lammily doll.

Barbie has long been criticized for her unattainable body proportions.

"Rather than criticizing her, we should make a proof of concept to show that a doll can actually look good if she were a normal woman," Lamm told USA TODAY Network.

Lammily has the body proportions of an average 19-year-old woman based on data from the Centers for Disease Control.

Lamm offers several versions of the first-edition Lammily. In one she wears a button-down shirt and denim shorts. In another, she wears a sports bra and running shorts. Lammily will have bendable elbows, wrists, knees and feet, Lamm said.

The dolls are expected to come out in November, he said.

Lamm is working with a former vice president of manufacturing from Mattel, the maker of Barbie.

The idea for the doll emerged from an art project last year. Nickolay created an image of what Barbie would look like with average body proportions and put that image next to a Barbie doll.

The image went viral and Lamm got requests to create the real thing, he said.

Mattel has not returned immediate requests for comment.
