NEW YORK – Wrestling star Darren Young surprised the sports world Wednesday when he announced that he is gay.
On Friday, he spoke with Today Show anchor Matt Lauer.
“I felt like it was the right place and the right time,’’ Young told Lauer Friday. “I feel by coming out I’m going to make a big difference in a lot of people’s lives. I’ve been suppressing these feelings for so long in my life — I’m going to be 30 on Nov. 2 — and I just need to be happy.’’
The announcement was a notable deviation from Young’s public persona. His twitter page described him as having a “life that revolves around three things – money, women and wrestling.”
Young is the first openly gay wrestler in the World Wrestling Entertainment organization.
“I’ll be honest with you, I was terrified, and I think anybody in my shoes would feel the same way,’’ he said on TODAY. “It took some guts.”
