PORTLAND-- The mother of "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening has died.

The TV show's executive consultant says Margaret Groening died April 22, in Portland. She was born Margaret Wiggum in Chisolm, Minn. on March 23, 1919.

The consultant, Antonia Coffman, said she did not know the cause of death. She added that Matt Groening was not available to comment on his mother's death.

In a 1997 Mother's Day interview, Mrs. Groening acknowledged that her son used several family names for the characters in the show, but said neither she nor her husband were anything like the cartoon characters.

Matt Groening used his mother's maiden name for the Chief Wiggum character in the hit show.
