Doyle upsets Drake for Beaverton mayor

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- A Nike-backed candidate denied Beaverton Mayor Rob Drake a fifth term.
Election Day News:
Councilor Dennis Doyle won about 55 percent of the votes counted Tuesday night.
Annexation and Nike litigation were the focus of the campaign.
In fall 2004, Drake asked the council to adopt a policy of forcibly annexing properties surrounding the city. Though Drake did not suggest annexing property that includes Nike headquarters, company officials were suspicious and sought public records from the city.
A Washington County judge later found Beaverton in contempt for deliberately concealing records. The case cost the city nearly $1 million.
Nike endorsed Doyle, and the sportswear giant and co-founder Phil Knight contributed money for polling, literature and postage.
Drake ran newspaper ads suggesting Nike would be running City Hall if Doyle is elected.
