Vandals damage school garden project in Salem

SALEM, Ore. -- Vandals have heavily damaged a garden project at Waldo/Jane Goodall Middle School that raised produce to be donated to the hungry.

Much of the garden produce is donated to the Marion-Polk Food Share and Union Gospel Mission. It is funded by grants and has operated for eight years. Most of the work is done by students.

Plants were ripped out, garden beds were smashed and irrigation hose was ripped apart.

"The sad thing is, most of this wasn't planted by adults. This was all planted by kids," said Waldo gardening and sixth-grade science teacher Sally White.

There have been several recent incidents of vandalism in the area.
