PORTLAND, Ore. -- Two Portland-area high schools may ultimately face closure in a bottom-up realignment of how students are taught.

Carole Smith, superintendent of Portland Public Schools, would not disclose which two schools may close, but stated online that both may ultimately reopen as magnet schools.

The realignment of Portland schools comes after several public meetings about possible changes to the way children are educated here. Parents want a selection of schooling that includes “neighborhood-centered” options, magnet programs that focus on general subjects like the creative arts or math and science, and charter schools.

An announcement on which schools would close likely won’t come until this fall, according to a schools evaluation timeline.
