Governor Ted Kulongoski signed a new bill into law Wednesday that will push junk food out of Oregon public schools and replace it with healthier choices. It set new nutritional standards for schools throughout the state.

The requirements include limits on the amount of fat, saturated fat, calories, and serving sizes for snacks sold in Oregon public schools. Trans fat is banned. The bill also establishes restrictions for the types of beverages sold to students.

The goal of the bill was to help reduce childhood obesity in Oregon.

It will go into effect at the start of the 2008-2009 school year.
