Corbett High School named best in Northwest

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Corbett may be a small, unincorporated community in the Columbia River Gorge but its high school beats the best Seattle, Portland or Eugene can offer, according to Newsweek magazine.
Corbett High School ranked higher than any other Pacific Northwest school and came in as the eighth-best public high school in the nation, according to the rankings.
Last year, Corbett HS ranked top among Oregon schools but was No. 86 in the nation.
The Corbett School District notes that Corbett High is nationally renowned for Advanced Placement achievment, producing 21 AP scholars in each of the last two school years.
Newsweek ranked 1,500 schools by the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008, divided by the number of graduating seniors.
In Oregon, only Corbett cracked the top 500. The closest competition comes from South Eugene High School, which was a distant ranking of No. 551.
Portland's highest rank came from Lincoln High School, No. 625.
Washington had five schools make the top 100, all in Bellevue: International School, Interlake, Newport, Sammamish and Bellevue.
Idaho does not have any schools in the top 100. Its highest ranking school is the Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy at No. 261.
The top school in the nation, Talented and Gifted, is a magnet school located in Dallas, Tex.
