St. Honoré delivers heavenly holiday desserts and treats

01:10 PM PST on Friday, December 21, 2007

By DREW CARNEY, kgw.com Staff

Bûche de Noël, the traditional French Christmas cake, is one of several seasonal desserts and breads offered throughout the holiday season at St. Honoré Boulangerie, a French bakery and café with two locations in the Portland area.

Watch Drew Carney mix it up with the bakers at St. Honoré Boulangerie during the 12/21/07 edition of Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.

The popular Bûche de Noël is shaped and decorated to resemble a yule log with a bull’s eye swirl inside made with butter cream.

Other traditional treats include Pain de Noël, a Christmas sweet bread with citrus flavor and nuts and Galette des Rois, a puff pastry filled with frangipane, a blend of almond and custard cream. Galette des Rois is traditionally served during Twelfth Night with a small, ceramic figurine hidden inside as a symbol of good luck.

Also available now exclusively at St. Honoré Boulangerie are Chocolats Maison. These are house-made chocolates, hand-crafted on site at the bakery. They come in a variety of flavors and are packaged in a clear 3.75-ounce container that sells for $8.50. The flavors include:

Ganache Truffle: dark chocolate with heavy cream Ganache coated with cocoa powder

Caramel Truffle: milk chocolate with heavy cream caramel Ganache, coated with white chocolate

Hazelnut Praliné: milk chocolate with hazelnut praline paste and crunchy roasted almonds

Orangette Confit: candied orange peels dipped in dark chocolate

Mendiants: dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate with craisins, dried apricots, raisins and roasted hazelnuts.

St. Honoré's original location is at 2335 NW Thurman Street (corner of 23rd and Thurman) in Northwest Portland. A second location opened at Lake View Village in Lake Oswego earlier this year. Both spots are open daily from 7am to 8pm; however both locations will be closing early on Christmas Eve (1:00pm) and will be closed all of Christmas Day.

To place your order for holiday breads and cakes you can call the Northwest Portland bakery at 503-445-4342, or the Lake Oswego bakery at 503-445-1379. More information about St. Honoré Boulangerie is available at www.sainthonorebakery.com.
