Celebrate Earth Day with a "Clean Air Cab" ride
12:07 PM PDT on Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Broadway Cab, Portland's oldest and largest cab company, founded in 1930, has put the first clean air cabs on Portland roads just in time for this year’s Earth Day (Tuesday, April 22nd) celebration.
The cab company recently replaced six of their traditional cabs with Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles, bringing to fruition a discussion that was started two years ago when Broadway Cab decided to take the company in a more environmentally sustainable direction.
"This decision is based on sustainable and economic reasons," said Raye Miles, president of Broadway Cab. "Taxicabs are not usually thought of as a green industry, but we're actually an important part of the system that allows people to live without one or multiple cars. We keep people mobile, and adding the Prius hybrid fleet is one step further in our company's essential sustainable effort."
"Having a long-time Portland company such as Broadway Cab, whose job is to put vehicles on the road so that others don't have to, making huge strides toward sustainability is exciting to see," said city commissioner Dan Saltzman of the Office of Sustainable Development. "I am very proud to support this effort and the cleaner choice it now gives taxi cab users."
You can join Broadway Cab in their celebration of Earth Month by helping to name one of their new Clean Air Cabs.
You can submit your suggestions online at www.broadwaycab.com. The best six names will be chosen, with prizes at stake including an overnight stay at the Heathman Hotel and Braodway Cab “TaxiCash”, valued at $100.
