Indoor kite flyers face no-wind situation

10:33 AM PDT on Thursday, March 27, 2008

By DREW CARNEY, kgw.com Staff

Lincoln City's annual Indoor Kite Festival takes flight at the Oregon Coast this weekend, Friday, March 28th through Sunday, March 30th.

Watch Drew Carney's indoor kite flying lesson during the 03/27/08 edition of Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.

The Festival takes place inside Lincoln City’s Taft High School. Again the key word there being, “INSIDE”.

There is no help from the famous Oregon Coast winds during this event. Instead, it’s a gravity-defying display of kite-flying technique, where ultra-light material and perpetual motion from the kite flyers’ hands, arms, and legs keep the objects on the end of their strings in flight.

The festival attracts some of the best performers in the business, with long and impressive resumes from both the indoor and outdoor kite flying worlds.

Lam Hoac, from British Columbia, Canada and Scott Weider, from Rhode Island are just two examples of performers who travel a long way to take part in what is truly considered one of the premier indoor kite flying events in the country.

In addition to providing demonstrations and serious competition, the pros will also be conducting indoor kite flying lessons throughout the Festival.

Admission to the 2007 Lincoln City Indoor Kite Festival is just $2 per person or $5 for a family of two adults and children under 15 years old.
