Out of the Crate & Into your Home

11:42 AM PST on Tuesday, February 27, 2007

By DREW CARNEY, kgw.com Staff

In what will go down for me personally as one of my most memorable moments in local TV, I left the crate behind this morning and started my run as the feature reporter for Northwest Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.

Happy to be out of the "Crate" and on the airwaves with Northwest Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.

Let’s just say I’m glad this morning is over. Not because I think things didn’t go smoothly, but simply because I don’t necessarily handle pressure like I felt this morning very well. In other words, I’ve had better night’s sleep than I had last night.

The crate promotion was a terrific idea by the creative minds here at KGW (namely Skyler Stever in the promotions department), allowing them to promote my hiring here despite the contractual limitations of not being able to use my name, face, or voice for six months.

Yet, while it’s nice to be promoted and feel wanted, there’s also a potentially unattainable level of expectation that comes with it. I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t nervous about at least coming close to meeting those expectations this morning.

I have to thank again Lt. Allen Oswalt and the Portland Fire Department for lending their credibility to today’s segment. Loren Skogland, owner/chef of Milo's City Cafe in Northeast Portland, also deserves a great deal of thanks for his participation this morning. If you haven’t had his signature Crab Cakes Benedict before, I strongly suggest checking out his restaurant on NE Broadway between 13th & 14th.

Tomorrow then, it’s Day #2 of what I hope will be many days to come here on the air at Channel 8.

Now, I could go ahead and tell you where I’m going to be tomorrow, but I think finding out exactly where I am each morning is a big reason why people tune into my segments.

So, I'll stick with the "wait & see" attitude, but I will promise you this... tomorrow’s story won’t involve a crate.
