Attention Taste Buds... It's National Pie Day!!!

09:36 AM PST on Wednesday, January 23, 2008

By DREW CARNEY, kgw.com Staff

Baker & Spice, a family-owned bakery in the Hillsdale neighborhood of Southwest Portland is celebrating its 3rd anniversary today, Wednesday, January 23rd, on what is also recognized as “National Pie Day”.

Watch Drew Carney's National Pie Day celebration at Baker & Spice on the 01/23/08 edition of Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.

In honor of the occasion, the home of seasonal fruit pies is giving back to its community all day long. For every slice of pie that Baker & Spice sells on National Pie Day, one dollar will be donated to the Neighborhood House, a non-profit organization that provides social and support services to families and senior citizens in the Southwest Portland area.

All Baker & Spice customers will also have the opportunity to win an entire pie of their choice on National Pie Day. In addition, bakery t-shirts will be raffled off throughout the day, and pie-loving kids are invited for story time and coloring activities at 2:00pm.

Winter pies now available include chocolate, banana and coconut cream, but given baker and owner Julie Richardson’s commitment to freezing fresh Oregon fruit at its peak, pear raspberry, apple blackberry and double-crusted apple pies can also be found on Baker & Spice’s National Pie Day menu.

Baker & Spice is located at 6330 SW Capitol Highway. They’re open from 6:00am to 6:00pm Tuesday – Friday, 7:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday, and 7:00am to 3:00pm on Sunday.

Baker and owner Julie Richardson opened the doors to her bakery and retail store in January of 2005, after developing a devoted following at Portland and Hillsdale Farmers Markets. Remaining true to her farmers’ market roots, Julie continues to source the finest seasonal ingredients, including fruits, herbs, artisan cheese and vegetables gathered from local purveyors. Beyond the selection of seasonal pies, Baker & Spice offers a variety of cookies, morning pastries, sandwiches made on Baker & Spice’s bread and rolls, and a savory selection of homemade soups that change daily.
