Salem is waking up to mostly cloudy skies this morning, thanks to a large area of cloudiness from showers and storms across southern Oregon. The visible satellite photo shows how wide reaching the cloud cover is. The weather pattern will bring days of erratic winds and possible new fire starts to southwest Oregon, where several large fire complexes continue to burn.
The Northwest radar form the National Weather Service, shows areas of rain wrapping around the low center. Animation of the radar shows a north to west movement of the showers. The Portland metro area will likely see a mix of cloudiness and sunshine into the first part of next week, as the low shows very little movement.
The national map above shows the upper low at 500 mb or 18,000 feet in the atmosphere, Friday night. Notice the yellow colored area and "X" near Portland as you look at the left side of the map. The "X" is an upper disturbance rotating around the low. All forecast models I look at, currently show the disturbance bringing showers and storms over the north Willamette valley Friday night. What forecasters call an upper low pattern is highly unpredictable and often becomes stationary, lasting for days. By unpredictable, I am referring to the often inability to pinpoint where the bands of rain will develop, as they wrap around the low pressure center. Once again, current forecast models show a narrow rain area over the north valley Friday night.
