PORTLAND, OR--KGW NewsChannel 8 announced Monday it will launch a new half-hour local current affairs program, Straight Talk, this Saturday, January 10, at 7:00 PM. The program will fill a void for serious, in-depth discussion and analysis of the area's most pressing issues. The Meet the Press style program will feature extended interviews with prominent leaders in business, government, education, and other sectors. KGW NewsChannel 8's award-winning anchor, Laural Porter, will host the program.
Discussions will reach into every area of importance to the people of the Northwest, with emphasis on the economy, education, politics, health care, energy, and social issues. This week's premiere program will feature Governor Ted Kulongoski.
"Given the current environment, more than ever we feel it's vital to have a sustainable forum in which topical compelling issues can be discussed at length," said DJ Wilson, KGW NewsChannel 8's president and general manager. "We're pleased to add this weekly program to our ongoing extensive commitment to news and information."
The show will also air on the regional cable channel, Northwest Cable News, which is carried throughout Oregon and Washington.
Straight Talk will be presented with limited commercial interruptions to provide the opportunity for an expansive discussion. The program is made possible in part by local sponsors, NECA, Azumano Travel, and Portland Spirit.
