Hey.. normally on Valentine's day I go on and on about flowers (first I don't want them, then I do), chocolates (like just one or two.. I definitely don't need the whole box), and a bunch of other light-hearted fun stuff (red wine is good for your heart). But not today. This story is important, and if you have teens I'd like you to see it. Since I'm having a heckuva time finding the press release on-line anywhere.. please forgive me for just doing a copy/paste in here.
Tomorrow, I'll post some fun pictures for you...
Here it is:
SURPRISING NEW RESEARCH PROVIDES FIRST CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT DATING ABUSE, VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ACTIVITY START AT AGE 11
RESEARCH UNCOVERS A SIGNIFICANT CONNECTION BETWEEN EARLY SEXUAL BEHAVIOR AND EXTREMELY HIGH LEVELS OF DATING VIOLENCE AND ABUSE AMONG OLDER TEENS
A disturbing Half of all teenage girls in relationships (48%) say they have been victims of verbal, physical and sexual abuse by their boyfriends, BUT for teens who had sex by age 14, an alarming 69% said they were victims of this abuse.
National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) along with the National Domestic Violence Hotline and Liz Claiborne Inc. launch new urgent national education campaign to ensure parents, teachers and students are educated about the issues at stake
FACT: 72% of TWEENS say boyfriend/girlfriend relationships usually begin at age 14 or younger; more than one in three 11- 13 year olds (37%) report they have been in a relationship;
FACT: More than 1 in 4 (28%) TWEENS say sexual activity is part of boyfriend/girlfriend relationships for tweens (11 - 14 year olds) 1 in 3 in relationships say their friends engage in sex;
FACT: 1 in 5 (20%) of all 13- 14 year old TWEENs in relationships say their friends have been have been struck, hit, slapped in anger by a boyfriend/girlfriend, nearly half of these same pre-adolescents (47%) say their friends are in verbally abusive dating relationships;
FACT: Data reveals a direct correlation between having sex before the age of 14 and abusive relationships;
Among all teens, ages 15- 18, one in ten (10%) admit they have been kicked, punched, hit by their partner; IN CONTRAST - one out of three teens who had sex by age 14 (33%) admit they have been physically abused by their partner.
More than one in three teens (36%) report that their partners wanted to know where they were all the time (36%) and who they were with all the time (37%) IN CONTRAST among teens who had sex before age 14, their experiences with power and control are much higher- 58% and 59% respectively.
Announcement of new survey on Tween (11-14) and Teen Dating Violence and Abuse, conducted by Teenage Research Unlimited (TRU) and initiated and supported by The National Domestic Violence Hotline and Liz Claiborne Inc, details how dating relationships among tweens begin much earlier than expected, sex is considered a part of a normal tween relationship and tweens are reporting significant levels of abusive behavior in relationships.
The survey provides frightening evidence that many parents think they know what their tweens are up to, but many don’t have any idea-from being in dating relationships starting as young as 11 to actual physical violence. Tween dating abuse and sexual activity fuels and intensifies teen dating abuse.
