Thursday, Lindsay Lohan reached a plea deal on misdemeanor drunken driving and cocaine charges. In lieu of jail time, a judge told Lohan she must pitch 40 innings of long relief for the Baltimore Orioles. Okay, I made that last bit up, but a day in jail and 10 days of community service (her real punishment) may be a lighter sentence right now.
Wednesday night, the O's pitching staff gave up 30 runs to the Texas Rangers in game one of a double header, setting a modern day major league record (the overall record of 36 runs dates back to 1897). To put that in perspective, the Rangers scored more runs in one game than they had mustered (28) in their previous 9 combined!
Here's the box score:
Texas 000 509 0 (10) 6 -- 30 29 1
Baltimore 102 000 000 -- 3 9 1
Four Orioles' pitchers gave up at least six runs a piece.
Wow! I normally don't feel sorry for pro baseball players, but this is just embarrassing. The Baltimore Ravens haven't given up thirty points in football since 2005.
This may be one of the biggest blowouts in sports history, as bad as the Chicago Bears beating the Redskins 73-0 in the 1940 NFL Championship game. In fact, I would call it the biggest blowout in baseball history.
Adding insult to injury, the Rangers then scored 9 runs to win game two of the double header. Too bad it doesn't mean anything. The Rangers sit in the AL West cellar, while the Orioles are in fourth in the AL East.
