By no means will I win over Duck fans/alumni with this...but hear me out.
Tonight, UO's Athletic Director Pat Kilkenny issued an apology to the UCLA Bruins basketball team, as well as to Kevin Love and his family. I'm told Kilkenny made numerous calls to help put this to rest. It all stems from last Thursday's game....with ALL of the derogatory chants directed at Love and his family. It's easy to see what it boils down to. Duck fans are irritated that Love opted to not become a Duck. Let me ask you this. If you could go to ANY school in the country to play basketball, would it be Oregon? This kid was the National Player of the Year people! He could go anywhere....and opted to return to his NATIVE state of California. Sure it's disappointing....but you shouldn't have to crucify the guy! C'mon already! I was at "The Pit" that night....and if I had children with me, I'd be screaming mad! The entire Love family was the target. There were homophobic chants and signs with horrible messages directed at the Loves. And as Kevin told the media after the game...."the last thing you want to do is wake me up". His line....26 points and 18 rebounds (a UCLA freshman record). I guess he had the last laugh, didn't he? For the record, I have no ties to the Ducks...but for all those who were partaking in it, I've got just two words for you....GROW UP! I think it's just insane that a harsher penalty wasn't levied onto the team! Kudos to Kilkenny and Ernie Kent for helping to curb these taunts! We'll soon see if Duck students have learned a valuable lesson!
