Let's be honest...nobody gave the Portland State Vikings much of a chance against 7th-ranked Gonzaga on Tuesday. Even as a proud Viking alum...I would have put my money on the Bulldogs. Gonzaga entered the night having won 55 of the 57 games they've played in the McCarthey Center. So, nobody thought PSU would leave "The Kennel" with a win. But they 'woofed' their way right past said Zags.... and beat a ranked opponent for the first time in school history. The final from Spokane, PSU 77...Gonzaga 70. And, oh, it was the Viks first win over Gonzaga since 1974.
Now, everybody across the country that happens to see that score will think to themselves, "How did Gonzaga lose THAT game?" When in reality, they should realize that it was Portland State that won it. They won it on hustle points, scrapping for every rebound possible, and by believing in themselves. The Vikings were not intimidated one bit. Heck, they played the likes of UCLA, Kansas, WSU last season. So, safe to say, they were well prepared entering this season. An epic win for the entire PSU family to share. Congrats to the guys that made it happen too! Keep in mind, many of these players are all homegrown players too. Dominguez (S.Salem), Nelson (McNary), and Waters (Grant) all leading the way. GO VIKS!!!
