One of the hottest topics of conversation on the Raptor Cam website has been the repeated appearance of plastic bags in the red-tail's nest. In fact plastic bags, and often several plastic bags have appeared int he nest during each of the seasons that Raptor Cam has been running. Birds sometimes incorporate plastic bags and other garbage into their nests. They may also just simply blow in on the wind just as they do across the rest of our landscape. Once these bags are loose in the environment, they can cause a variety of problems for wildlife/

Mayor Adams announced today that he will introduce and ordinance to ban single use plastic bags. This is a proposal that the city considered earlier this year but shelved when it appeared that the legislature would enact a statewide ban. the legislature failed to follow through so the city is now once again moving forward. The will be a hearing at City Hall  at 3:45 on July 21, 2011.

For updates on this ordinance and how to get involved, please check the Audubon website.
