The Raptor Cam Red-tails both visited the nest this morning. The female spent more than an hour moving branches and other materials around and giving the nest a close overall inspection. Periodically she would nestle down into the hollow area seemingly to try it out for size. We are still probabkly a couple of weeks out from nesting. In prior years the first egg has been laid on the following dates:

2007    March 16

2008    March 8

2009    March 6

2010    March 3

2011    March 11

Return to Raptor Cam

Today also marked the return of the plastic bag. Longtime Raptor Cam viewers will recall that the hawks brough a plastic bag into the nest each year since they started nesting at this site. Initially folks speculated that the bags blew into the nest. However it has become apparent over the years that in fact the hawks actually bring them in deliberately. It is not uncommon for birds to incorporate garbage into their nests. What is odd at this nest is how much time the hawks appear to spend moving the plastic bags around---placing them uner the eggs, over the eggs, carrying them about. When the yong hatch they use the bags for hunting practice.
