PORTLAND - The website Livability votes Portland one of the top-10 best music scenes in America.
Editors left out Nashville, New York City and Los Angeles -- but said they ranked Portland No. 3 based on the number of music venues, independent record stores and local musicians and a vibrant nightlife.
The publication ranks the best 500 cities in America for livability issues. And strangely enough, Seattle was nowhere to be found on the list. Neither was "Live music capital of the world" Austin, Texas.
Livability cited Slate, which has named Portland “America's Indie Rock Mecca,” for the big-name The Decemberists, Blitzen Trapper and the Dandy Warhols. Portland garage bands began getting attention in the 1960s, with the Kingsmen, Paul Revere and the Raiders and into the punk and new wave underground scenes of the 80s.
"It's the great venues and community connectedness that draw music lovers to Portland," Livability said, name-checking the Doug Fir Lounge for its "intimate vibe, '50s-style décor, original woodwork and glass designs" and state-of-the-art sound equipment.
