PORTLAND - High Summer in Oregon - and for many, football practice and preseason begin, back to school ads pollute the airwaves, but hopefully we'll get a couple months of sun in, and wish each other a productive autumn as we meet up at the derby.
I've probably missed one year out of the past 10, and that sucked, because the chance to see everyone is at the 15th annual PDX Adult Soapbox Derby on Mt. Tabor Saturday.
The car racing is a blast too. Their site is the most organized I've ever seen this year, with map routes and heats by team, and class listed on a spreadsheet.
"These pages are dedicated to all those who have spilled their blood, or even worse, spilled their beer," the site proclaims.
Some of my favorite teams this year: The Fundead, Millhouse in Bizzario Cart, iPad 3, Team Liability and the Pietanic.
There's even a sponsored Old Lompoc's Soapbox beer.
No vending is on site, so bring a picnic. Starts at 10 a.m. - after party at the Tonic at 6.
