For many it's spring cleaning time. For me... it's spring remodeling. I decided a few months back to take the plunge. My 1990's condo needed a face-lift and what better time than now to do it. As KGW's Environmental Reporter, I've covered many a "green project. And like those I've done stories on, I've decided I not only want to be kind to the earth, I want to be kind to me. That includes chemical free/all-natural products, no-voc paints, bamboo floors, etc.

Oh, and I should mention, I am not using a general contractor. So while I am treating the earth with kindness, I am torturing myself. I was an English major. If I could write myself an energy efficient, gourmet kitchen, I would be in great shape. Needless to say... it's been a trying experience.

I am starting with the floors. Picked out strand bamboo. LOVE IT! I am a total bargain hunter. I shopped around for weeks, but finally found some I could afford. It's just starting to go in, but it looks great. I have to take a moment to give Matt Kneeland some props here. I admit it, I'm a bit of a control-freak. But he's doing a great job at both putting in my floors and putting up with my knit-picking. Yes, I am a bit of a perfectionist, but this is also my first remodel. Those of you who have done this before... you know what I'm talking about.

Oh the joys of living with no kitchen. (Even though, to the delight of our neighbors, our refrigerator has been temporarily moved out to the porch.) But, I just have to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. A much more earth friendly, healthier, and energy efficient light.

Since I am a novice at this, I would welcome any feedback, suggestions or words of warning. Feel free to shoot me an e-mail.

I'm off to check on my floors.
