It's not often I get phone calls at 6:30AM in the morning...but I got one today. It was KGW calling and sadly I learned that former Blazer Kevin Duckworth had passed away. Kevin was a terrific player making the NBA All-star team twice, however, Kevin was a great person as well.

Like so many of the players from those great Blazer teams...Kevin was fun to cover and interview. The last time I interviewed him was this past season on Sports Sunday. Duck and Jerome Kersey came by the studio and we had a great time visiting and looking back on their glory days. I asked Kevin about the time he played in game 7 of the Western Conference Finals with a broken right hand. Duck's face beamed as he talked about the standing ovation he received.

Duckworth battled with his weight as a player...and then in retirement, but it seemed he always had a great attitude. He talked abut how much he loved Portland...and then said on Sports Sunday "I heard that when you live in Portland...you put on more weight." He laughed about it and so did Jerome and I...with Kersey adding, "we'll give you that."

By the way, you can see that interview on KGW.COM.

Jerome and Kevin were good friends...and Kersey joked today about how Duckworth didn't like people wearing shoes on his carpeting at his house. Jerome says he wore his shoes on purpurse just to tease Kevin.

There's a reason that Blazer fans connected with those teams from the early 90's. They were great teams that had great guys. Kevin Duckworth was one of those guys.
