PORTLAND, Ore. -- It appears the struggling economy is affecting travel at Portland International Airport. Fewer passengers are expected this holiday season.

“Like most airports across the country, we are seeing some decreasing and largely that’s tied to the economy,” said Steve Johnson, a spokesperson for PDX.

Johnson says an estimated 300,000 passengers will fly in and out of PDX. That is eleven percent less than last year.

Holly Armstrong considers herself an avid air traveler. She is already noticing the trend.

“I left San Diego on Southwest and it wasn’t half full. I came back to Portland from Denver and it wasn’t half full,” said Armstrong.

And since traffic in the terminal is projected to be less than ideal this holiday season, travelers can expect some perks.

“We’re working with concessions here through promotions where they’ll offer specials to entice travelers to do some shopping, grab a quick bite, and enjoy the entertainment out here,” added Johnson.

One passenger who travels often is not so sure the promotions will work.

“We’re having a conference call tomorrow, all the people that work with me, to possibly talk about expense control,” said Mel Selway, an air traveler.

Either way the numbers are projected to be lower, but airport officials still warn travelers to give themselves plenty of time to make their flight.
