Clackamas County Commissioners have approved a new one-year pilot program that calls for 10-hour workdays, Monday through Thursday.

The commissioners made the move to combat rising energy costs, save taxpayers money, and reduce the county’s carbon footprint. The revised schedule also offers the public longer, more convenient access to county offices.

The hours will typically extend from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

“We’re excited about implementing this new initiative,” said County Commission Chairwoman Lynn Petersen. “It shows we are taking our commitment to sustainability very seriously.”

Approval of the alternate workweek followed a months-long county study that included surveys of county employees and the public. The commissioners also reviewed other local governments that have implemented similar programs

The program will effect about 1,210 workers. It does not extend to emergency service providers and county agencies covered by state statute.

The pilot-program is expected to begin in mid-October.
