PORTLAND, Ore. -- The dollars are pouring in to Portland.
The Rose City was chosen as one of four U.S. cities to promote new one dollar coins.
The U.S. Mint said you’ll be seeing the coins at attractions and retailers, and in TV, radio, newspaper and online ads this month.

“When each of us spends the one dollar coin, we make a difference for our country, because the coin is durable and using it saves the nation money,” United States Mint Director Ed Moy said. “We hope our pilot cities lead the change.”
Mint officials said they chose Portland because it’s known as a unique, yet all-American city. The other three pilot cities were Grand Rapids, Michigan; Austin, Texas; and Charlotte, North Carolina.
Similar coins have been a part of America’s currency for many decades, but have not been as widely used as paper money.
The Presidential One Dollar Coin Act was passed in 2005, and started with the release of the George Washington coin. It will honor the presidents in the order that they served, with four coins issued each year.
