Columbia River halibut fishery to close in Northwest
04:42 PM PDT on Thursday, August 9, 2007
The Columbia River halibut sports fishery will close at one minute before midnight on Sunday, Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department officials said Thursday.
The International Pacific Halibut Commission and the Oregon and Washington departments of fish and wildlife concluded that the summer quota of 6,307 pounds would be reached by then. About half that amount was caught on the first weekend of the season that started Aug. 3.

The Columbia fishery area extends from Oregon's Cape Falcon near Manzanita to Washington's Leadbetter Point south of Willapa Bay.
Don Bodenmiller of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said quotas remain unfilled south of Cape Falcon and that weekend fisheries will continue there until the quota is filled or until the end of the season Oct. 28.
Fishery managers will review this weekend's Columbia catch on Aug. 16 to see if there is enough left for a brief reopening.
The next regularly scheduled halibut season is in May.
