LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Thousands of mortgage holders were in danger of becoming ID theft victims after two people were arrested for stealing customer information from Countrywide.

Assistant Los Angeles bureau FBI Director Salvador Hernandez said 36-year-old Rene L. Rebollo Jr was arrested in Pasadena Friday. He is a former employee of Countrywide Home Loan.

Investigators think while Rebello worked as a senior financial analyst in the subprime sector of the company, he downloaded customer information on flash drives.

He then opened a bank account to store the money from selling the information, the FBI said. It’s estimated he made between $50,000 and $70,000.

After Countrywide officials noticed a security breach, the FBI interviewed Rebollo, who told them he had given out information about customer around the country over the past two years.

Agents said 25-year-old Wahid Siddiqi, of Thousand Oaks, tried to buy the data after talking with an undercover witness. He was arrested Friday and charged with fraud

Countrywide Communications Vice President Susan Martin said affected customers would be notified by mail. A special hotline was set up at (800) 669-6607.
