New store in SE keeps it down on the farm

PORTLAND, Ore. -- More people are shopping for food in their own backyard. Not only with a garden -- but with livestock.
Now there is a Southeast Portland store helping keep them down on the “urban farm.”
The Urban Farm Store on Southeast Morrison caters to a growing number of city folk becoming urban farmers.
Store owner Robert Litt decided it was time to go back in history and reintroduce a simpler way of sustainability. The chickens there rule the roost.
“I think now there's a big movement we're reconnecting with your food, knowing where it comes from and having more control over it,” Litt said.
From chick starter kits, to making your own cheese, planting your own seeds and starting your own bee hive, the idea is to get back in balance with the Earth, the way nature planned it.
Teacher Eric Stuben uses his own urban farming experience to share in the class room and at home.
“I thought that this would be something that helps with my son and our family where things come from and being more involved in our food process,” he said.
The urban farm store's been open only a few months.
“It's very gratifying to be thriving,” Litt said. “I just timed it perfectly...so that's really been helping cover a lot of my mistakes to make me look good.”
And already there's interest from other parts of the country on how to bring them down on the farm -- but, in the city.
When it comes to having chickens in your backyard, the city allows three, and no roosters.
