Salmon season closes early above Bonneville
10:12 AM PDT on Monday, June 30, 2008
SALEM, Ore. -- The adult chinook salmon fishery on the Columbia River from Bonneville Dam to near Pasco, Wash., will close early this year, at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Oregon and Washington fishery managers said.
The season was to end July 31, or when the available quota was met, but catch rates have been higher than expected and the fishery is projected to exceed the available quota by June 30. Retention of chinook jacks will remain open on the Columbia River.
Retention of sockeye salmon from the river mouth to Pasco has been extended through July 6.
