Nationwide crib recall frustrates some parents

Unit-8 is hearing from consumers frustrated over how a national baby crib recall is being handled.
The recall is supposed to protect infants from strangulation, but some parents question whether the crib maker really has child safety in mind.
About 320,000 of the Jardine cribs have been recalled, but parents claim the company is making it difficult to replace the potentially dangerous cribs.
One child, 18-month-old Owen is sleeping in a cramped playpen after his mom learned his crib could be deadly.
“These slats can become loose and the kids heads and feet can go through them and possibly strangle them,” Audrey Frydenlund said.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 42 incidents of broken slats and spindles. Some children were trapped, 2 were injured.
The cribs were sold locally by Babies R Us and Toys R Us and were made in Taiwan by Jardine Enterprises between 2002 and 2008.
Frydenlund claimed this recall is not fair because it takes too long. Government regulators said the cribs are far too dangerous to sleep in, but getting a voucher to replace one can take weeks.
That's because you have to sign up for the vouchers on line and wait for the company to respond.
“If they truly did have children's safety in mind, they would allow us to take it back to the store,” said Frydenlund.
Unit 8 asked officials with the Consumer Product Safety Commission why stores aren't handling the vouchers.
They said the vouchers are part of a settlement agreement between the CPSC and Jardine Enterprises and should arrive to consumers who apply within two weeks.

About 320,000 Jardine cribs are being recalled because of safety concerns.
This mother couldn't wait that long. She purchased a new crib for Owen.
“My concern is I have to buy a new crib and so when I get the voucher it doesn’t do me any good because I've already got a new crib,”said Fredenlund.
Owen finally gets a safe comfortable place to sleep. However, his mom paid for it, not the company that built Owen’s recalled crib.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission wants to hear complaints from anyone having trouble with this recall . They want everyone who thinks they might have one of these cribs to check model numbers immediately. They say they are not safe to sleep in, even for one night.
They urge parents to use portable cribs or borrow one until they receive their replacement vouchers. If you’re suffering an economic hardship and have no place for your child to sleep while you’re waiting for the voucher, the CPSC can link you to programs that might help you.
